XERO

Role: Design Researcher/ UX Researcher

2019

I worked with the Product Design team at Xero, an accounting software company that makes tools to help small businesses. I oversaw and ran generative research for new product feature development as well as evaluative research to improve usability of features. The US Product team worked collaboratively with remote teams located in New Zealand, Australia, and New York.

Xero was a great company to work for and I greatly respect their product and approach to design.

Purchasing a Company Car Research Overview

I was in charge of designing and  leading a research project focused on improving the user experience surrounding the Purchasing Company Car feature. I conducted initial secondary research, spoke with product designers to gain background context, then planned the entirety of the research project and managed the whole study across 2 distinct international user groups (16 participants). Using both direct interviewing in combination with usability studies to understand how users were interacting with the feature provided helpful for targeting the insights we were hoping to gather. I then synthesized the data and worked with my team to gain new perspectives on findings, further bucketed, and wrote a report on my findings with short actionable insights and How Might We’s to guide the Product Design team. The user insights gained from the research study directly impacted product feature choices that exist today and ultimately impacted the user experience enabling simplicity, ease of use, and significantly reduced instances of incorrect filing. It was a success and I learned loads about UK’s HMRC and Company Car filing!
